Lakes

There have been a few comments on the use of the Lakes. Putts Palms and Six Tunnels are great swimming holes but small in comparison to the Lakes at the moment. With the pool still out of action (will it be completed this month?) its understandable locals are looking at the Lakes for fun. There seems to be an issue with boats and boards being used so perhaps someone can clear this up.

The lakes are on a RioTinto Alcan mining lease. A notice recently in the local paper made it clear NO POWER BOATS.
As for the other areas mentioned for swimming it is only swimming pools from now. It is now an offence for humans to swim in areas where they should reasonably know estuarine crocodiles are regularly sighted.

The new Queensland estuarine crocodile conservation plan came into force over the weekend - 1st March - and makes it illegal to drive a boat within 10 metres of a crocodile without a reasonable excuse and an offence to stand in water more than knee-deep in crocodile areas.

QLD Estuarine conservation plan, whot a load of shite. Start putting in croc traps and have them relocated to farms like the NT do it. Get the Town office to use the rates money to clean up the lakes, put in new BBQs,tables and fence it to keep the crocs out and people might use the area...

how far is the pool from rocky point?
its reasonable to assume crocks can walk that far, so the pool will be out of bounds.Swim at risk of prosecution. No mention of fences making risky ares safe, in the legislation is there. Int any one else sick of all these ca ra ap py
rules.

Aren't the lakes still under Cook Shire hence the reason why they are so shitty and never get any love.

As for the not swimming there because of crocs... if you've been here a while you'd remember the days when the lakes were so busy you had to get there early of a weekend just to get a spot to swim. There was even a 'Raft Race' which was a pretty good community event in it's day. There are sightings in there every year- roughly around wet season...not really regular if you ask me. Fair to say it's not a good idea to advocate swmimming in an area where crocs are known but there are measures that could be taken to make it 'safer' and recreationally viable.
