Rates ... please .... $1255.65 per year ... what for?

Reduce the garbage collection to once a week ... be reasonable please ... we are here trying to get ahead... not go backwards.

If there is to be a community of Weipa then try to act a bit 'community minded'. High rates and over the top fees for dog registration, pool use and food (living expenses) are making it impossible to try to justify living in this beautiful place.

I love Weipa - have been here all my life ... now it's getting too expensive to live here. What's going on? Your thoughts?

I bet you are glad you did not purchase extra land, or you would have two rates notices!
Also remember that the federal government gets some from the GST part of it. True if you are a businesses you get it back but not so for most owners.
I don't agree however with your claim about dog owners. Did you know if you have more than two dogs and are renting a kennel residents subsidies you!
Some seem to get a good deal!

I think in this climate two refuse collections a week is hygienic and I don't mind paying for that but the discount is pretty crappy - don't other shires (yes I know we aren't a shire YET) have decent discounts? Can someone tell us what registration dog owners pay 'outside'?

No matter how you look at it, Weipa residents are at the mercy of a Company who's only concern is profit.
Wages are no longer worth staying for compared to other areas. Alcohol prohibitions are taking the freedoms we were accustomed to and fuel prices keep us closer to town as we spend more of our income on rents or mortgages and un-fresh food..
It was good while it lasted but the life style many of us came for no longer exists. Time for this person to go. In fact I already have and earn more money in 8 hour days than 12 in Weipa, buy cheaper fuel, have a better value house, eat fresh food and can carry any amount of alcohol any where. While having two bins collected per week as part of my very reasonable rates. Green bin yellow bin.

Everyone should in Weipa should petition Woolies to lower thier prices.
Why don't the rates go into cleaning up this town and buying paint for the 60's old syle buildings and fix the roads.

What would be the point of petitioning Woolies?... It would go something like, 'oh sir, I see you have a petition for us to lower our prices. Very well, are there any consequences?'... um well, we will still shop at Woolies -- but we wont he happy about it - so there!! There has to be a better way than going begging to Woolies to lower their prices and I reckon the only way would be to introduce real competition. Or better yet, Weipa seems to me to be the only place where growing your own vegies, keeping chickens, etc. is actually economically viable.
